A Complete Guide To Thermage Treatment By Dr Ashish Dutta

What is Thermage?

Thermage is a revolutionary anti-aging treatment that revitalizes lifeless, lackluster skin, giving it a glow that can instantly transform how you look and feel. Thermage is used to non-surgically tighten and lift the skin. It is revolutionary because does not require invasive surgery, chemicals, needles or lasers. So it is time to rejoice for patients who are looking for subtle improvements or are not ready for a traditional facelift; Thermage involves the treatment of sagging skin and wrinkles without incisions or downtime (recovery time).

Where can it be used?

It can be used on the whole face to tighten the cheeks, reduce nasolabial folds (between the nose and the mouth), and to tighten and lift skin along the jaw line. Thermage can also be used on the forehead to lift the eyebrows and make the eyes look more open.

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure uses radiofrequency energy to create a uniform heating effect in the deep dermis. This gentle heating tightens existing collagen and stimulates the production of new collagen. It reduces wrinkles and achieves brow, cheek and jawline lifting. The skin tissue lifting and tightening is caused by immediate collagen contraction followed by gradual collagen tightening. The result is a more youthful appearance to lax and sagging skin.  Thermage works on a few basic principles:

  • It essentially transfers heat to the epidermis, which not only encourages collagen production, but also tightens existing collagen. This is achieved partly through radiofrequency technology, which produces electrical currents that causes collagen within the skin to contract and gradually reform. This is why most individuals experience dramatic tightening and smoothing of the skin over the six months following treatment. Since the outer layers of the skin are unaffected, there is almost no recovery time involved. Sounds too good to be true? The best part is that in most people the results from a single Thermage treatment tend to last up to ten years.

While there are a number of procedures available that affect collagen, only the Thermage procedure offers a completely non-invasive, no-downtime method to tighten loose skin and is FDA approved. This procedure is the only non-invasive method that delivers tighter skin, renewed facial contours and healthier collagen. (Collagen is the building block that provides structure to your skin.)

What are the results like?

The Thermage procedure causes immediate tightening of the collagen structure, with additional tightening over time. Results can last 24 – 36 months or longer based on the individual patient’s natural aging process. Research studies show that about 90% of patients show a measurable and noticeable effect at 6 months.  Many patients see some results immediately. For the 10% who do not see visible tightening, there is still a good result because it helps to prevent sagging over the next year or two. Preservation still rests as a benefit, if not instant improvement.

Who are the suitable candidates for the treatment?

The best candidates for Thermage are people with mild-to-moderate skin laxity who don’t require modification of muscle or fat underlying the skin. Ideally, they have only modest sun damage and don’t smoke. Unfortunately, Thermage has difficulty producing superior results on people with thick layers of underlying fat or excessively loose muscles. This is because Thermage can’t remove fat deposits or tighten muscles. Thermage also can’t reverse severely lax skin—but luckily for many patients it can correct skin that has begun to sag with age.

It must be kept in mind that though Thermage can be performed almost anywhere on the face or body where loose skin is present, it can’t be applied to areas that are tattooed.
